Why Alcohol Calories Are Easy to Underestimate
Alcohol contains 7 kcal per gram, more than protein and carbohydrates (4 kcal/g each), and almost as much as fat (9 kcal/g). A night out with 3 glasses of wine and 2 pints of beer adds approximately 800–1,000 kcal, the equivalent of an entire additional meal.
Most food tracking apps are used diligently for food but alcohol is frequently omitted, creating a systematic blind spot in calorie tracking.
Alcohol and Fat Loss: The Mechanism
Alcohol is metabolised preferentially by the liver. When blood alcohol is present, the liver prioritises alcohol processing over other metabolic functions, including fat oxidation. This means:
- Fat burning is essentially paused while alcohol is being metabolised
- Any excess dietary calories consumed while drinking are more likely to be stored as fat
- Alcohol stimulates appetite and reduces dietary restraint, increasing calorie intake further
Lower-Calorie Drinking Strategies
- Spirits with soda water instead of tonic or juice reduces mixer calories to zero
- Dry wine over sweet wine or dessert wine
- Light beer or low-alcohol beers
- Alternating alcohol with water, reduces total consumption by 30–50%
- Tracking alcohol calories as part of your daily calorie budget rather than "not counting" them
