Why Alcohol Calories Are Easy to Underestimate

Alcohol contains 7 kcal per gram, more than protein and carbohydrates (4 kcal/g each), and almost as much as fat (9 kcal/g). A night out with 3 glasses of wine and 2 pints of beer adds approximately 800–1,000 kcal, the equivalent of an entire additional meal.

Most food tracking apps are used diligently for food but alcohol is frequently omitted, creating a systematic blind spot in calorie tracking.

Alcohol and Fat Loss: The Mechanism

Alcohol is metabolised preferentially by the liver. When blood alcohol is present, the liver prioritises alcohol processing over other metabolic functions, including fat oxidation. This means:

  • Fat burning is essentially paused while alcohol is being metabolised
  • Any excess dietary calories consumed while drinking are more likely to be stored as fat
  • Alcohol stimulates appetite and reduces dietary restraint, increasing calorie intake further

Lower-Calorie Drinking Strategies

  • Spirits with soda water instead of tonic or juice reduces mixer calories to zero
  • Dry wine over sweet wine or dessert wine
  • Light beer or low-alcohol beers
  • Alternating alcohol with water, reduces total consumption by 30–50%
  • Tracking alcohol calories as part of your daily calorie budget rather than "not counting" them

Frequently Asked Questions

How many calories are in a glass of wine?
A medium glass of wine (175ml, ~12% ABV) contains approximately 160 kcal. A large glass (250ml) contains approximately 214 kcal. Dry wines (Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio) are slightly lower; sweet wines are higher. Sparkling wine (Prosecco, Champagne) is approximately 85–100 kcal per 125ml flute.
How many calories are in a pint of beer?
A pint (568ml) of standard lager or beer (4–5% ABV) contains approximately 200–230 kcal. Low-alcohol beers (under 2.5% ABV) can be as low as 70–90 kcal/pint. Craft beers and IPAs with higher ABV (5.5–7%) typically contain 250–310 kcal per pint. A 330ml bottle of standard beer is approximately 140–160 kcal.
Are spirits low calorie?
A single measure (25ml) of spirit (vodka, gin, rum, whisky, typically 40% ABV) is approximately 55–65 kcal. The calorie count is almost entirely from alcohol itself. Spirits are low calorie per unit, but mixers dramatically change the total: tonic water adds 85 kcal/150ml; regular cola adds 60 kcal/150ml; soda water adds 0 kcal. A vodka soda with lime is approximately 95 kcal total; a gin and regular tonic approximately 145 kcal.
Does alcohol cause weight gain?
Alcohol contributes calories (7 kcal/g) that add to total daily intake. Alcohol is metabolised preferentially, while the liver processes alcohol, fat oxidation is paused, meaning any excess energy from food consumed while drinking is more likely to be stored. The calories themselves, rather than any unique fat-storage mechanism, explain most alcohol-related weight gain. For weight management, tracking alcohol calories as part of daily calorie targets is more effective than eliminating alcohol entirely.
